Game 7, Game Willing Goal

Bring on Nashville!

After an EPIC battle with the reigning Stanley Cup Champions, the Chicago Blackhawks, the Vancouver Canucks will advance to the second round of the 2011 Stanley Cup playoffs. The heart stopping competition started off with a bang when Alexandre Burrows scored from the slot in the first five minutes of the game.  Ryan Kesler and Mason Raymond assisted in the games opening goal.  The two teams traded chances back and forth but neither Roberto Luongo nor Corey Crawford were willing to give up a goal.  Burrows, number 14,  was then  awarded a penalty shot in the third period after being hauled down on a breakaway by Duncan Keith, but unfortunately, he was unable to seal the deal on the attempt.  The two teams battled hard untll 1:56 left in the third period when Jonathan Toews, the Chicago captain, scored the tying goal on a shorthanded attempt after an Alexandre Burrows giveaway in the neutral zone.  It was the captains first goal of the Playoffs. Oddly enough, the whole scenario was very reminiscent of the 2010 Winter Olympics Gold Medal Hockey Game, which can be seen here. The game now had to be decided in Overtime!  After taking a two minute tripping penalty in overtime, Burrows was able to stop a clearing attempt by the Chris Campolli in the Blackhawks zone and blasted the overtime winning and series closing goal at 14:40 of the first overtime period.  (you can watch the winning goal here “Burrows game 7 winning goal“)

Luongo and Crawford played exceptionally well for their respective teams.  Ryan Kesler was a beast the entire game with assisting on the opening goal and throwing punishing hits throughout the game and the monkey is finally off the Canucks back.  After two consecutive years of losing the the Chicago Blackhawks in the playoffs, the Canucks are finally able to defeat their arch nemesis and can continue their quest for Lord Stanley’s Cup.

The Vancouver Canucks will host the Nashville Predators Thursday April 28th at 6:00PM at Rogers Arena to kick off the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
